Amager Power Station Unit 1 (AMV1) owned by Vattenfall is one of the few power units supplying steam to the old district heat system of Copenhagen. This system was the first to be installed in Denmark back in 1925 and it supplies the ancient historic part of the city and the big hospitals with heat. Later on the DHS was changed to hot water, and all newer power plants on the grid were built to supply hot water. In the community of Copenhagen it was considered to upgrade the old steam based system to hot water, but the impact on the old city was considered to be too extensive. In 2005 it was therefore decided to built a new boiler primary dedicated to supply steam to the old DHS.
Avedøre Power Station Unit 2 (AVV2) owned by DONG Energy is one of the most efficient, fuel flexible, and environmentally friendly power plants in the world. Besides generating electricity, the plant also supplies heat to the Copenhagen district heating network. The commissioning took place in 2001. The new unit’s USC boiler has been designed with a unique multi fuel firing system which makes it possible to utilize: coal, HFO, NG and wood pellets as fuels. All these fuels can be burned in the same burners.
Nordjylland power plant near Aalborg (Denmark) is owned by Vattenfall. The plant represents the latest technological development with respect to coal fired units and consists of an Ultra Super Critical (USC) boiler with full flue gas cleaning, i.e. NOx, dust and SO2 removal. The plant was put into commercial operation in 1998. The boiler is fulfilling the expectation of an availability above 98%.
