Official Opening of the Brigg Renewable Energy Plant

Today the Brigg Renewable Energy Plant was officially opened by Cllr. Trevor Foster, North Lincolnshire Mayor, in the presence of local, national and European dignitaries. The renewable energy plant, which is the largest dedicated straw fired biomass plant in the UK, generates 40MW of electricity, which is enough to supply 75,000 homes and save over 250,000 tons of CO2 every year.

The plant is owned by BWSC North Lincs Ltd (BNLL), a joint venture between PensionDanmark, Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). The GBP 162m investment is based on biomass energy technology supplied by BWSC under a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction contract. BWSC is responsible for operation and maintenance of the plant under a 15-year operation and maintenance agreement.

The core of the Brigg plant is represented by the vibrating grate fired boiler supplied by Burmeister & Wain Energy A/S (BWE) the Danish high-tech company which is part of the Italian STF Group. The BWE supply also includes the straw feeding system and the Selective Non Catalytic Reduction DeNOx system (SNCR) to achieve the emission levels specifically requested by Authorities for this type of plants.
