New Order for Biomass Boiler in Cramlington, UK

On September 17th, 2015 the EPC consortium formed by Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) and Burmeister & Wain Energy A/S (BWE) have been awarded the contract for the design, supply and erection of the biomass plant located in the northern England. The client is Cramlington Renewable Energy Development Ltd. of UK.

The 77.8 MWth woodchips fired boiler supplied by BWE represents the core of the Cramlington Plant and it is the fourth biomass boiler supplied by BWE in the UK since  2011.

The Cramlington Plant differs from the other biomass plants as it is based on the steam reheat technology, where the steam, after having been through the turbine’s first high-pressure level, is reheated in the boiler and led to the turbine’s medium pressure level. This improves the plant cycle efficiency by 2 percentage points and therefore provides a higher plant output with both economic and environmental advantages. Using this technology it is estimated to achieve a CO2 reduction of approx. 56,000 tons per year compared to gas-fired power plants.

The biomass fuel to be used at the Cramlington Power Plant will be a combination of virgin wood and forest residues from sustainable forestry and clean recycled woodchips.

The Cramlington Power Plant shall produce electricity to the public power grid and heating to two pharmaceutical companies nearby.

Commercial operation is expected by the end of 2017.
